Character info :
Name: Kurogane(黒鋼)
Series/Fandom: Tsubasa reservoir chronicles.
Gender: Male
Age: In his twenties , between 24 and 27 maybe.
Species: Human

Room: 108
Appearance :
Kurogane is very tall (between 6.3 and 6.4 feet.) and has a muscular body.
His hair is as black as ebony; he keeps it short and spiky but usually lets few thin strands fall over his eyes. Kurogane has crimson eyes with slightly slitted pupils. His face is smooth with a well defined jaw-line; he has no facial hair excepted heavy eyebrows.
He can be described as quite handsome despite the fact he seems to have a constant frown stuck on his face.
Kurogane doesn’t smile, he smirks or grins . He usually wears black casual clothes.
He lost his left arm; it is now replaced by a robotic one. His arm isn’t covered with fake skin, the mechanism is visible.
Personality :
Kurogane is a real grump. He can be rough mannered and blunt.
He’s easy to annoy because has no patience when it comes to deal with people. Kurogane is really short tempered and it’s easy to make him yell. He’s not really sociable and doesn’t trust people easily. Despite this, he’s a loyal man and a reliable friend.
Kurogane isn't a talkative person and tends to speak only when it is needed. Sometimes he’d merely answer to people with a grunt or a glare. Noisy or clingy personalities can get on his nerves easily. He’s serious and doesn’t have a good sense of humour. Don’t make too much fun of him or he’ll bite.

Kurogane is highly perceptive. Even if he seems to do not care about people he notices a lot of things like a fake smile or a strange behaviour…
He’s caring and gentle with the ones he likes but does his best to hide it. If you let him understand you noticed this aspect of his personality, he would yell at you and pretend he’s not like that. He tends to be shy about it and doesn’t open up to others easily.

He worries a lot about the members of his group and has a strong desire to protect them. Despite this he wouldn’t admit aloud that he has affection for them.
He is ready to make huge sacrifices for them. He doesn’t want to lose anybody anymore .Despite this he wouldn’t put his life on the line for nothing. He considers suicide as a dishonourable death, and not fighting to stay alive is unconceivable and makes no sense for him. He doesn’t understand Fye when the mage seems to do not value his own life. It makes him angry. In Tokyo world ; he decided to take responsibility of the mage’s life when he was about to give it up and let himself die:
Kurogane has, almost since the beginning, exhibited a fatherly behaviour towards Shaolan, one of his young companions. But in Tokyo, the kid who started the journey with them turned out to be a clone of the real Shaolan, possessing half of the original's heart/soul.. When the real Shaolan got back his full heart, the clone became some kind of senseless and soulless puppet having only the goal of gathering the princess's feathers. He hurt Fye, almost to the point of death, for the sake of his goal, stealing half of his magic concealed in his left eye. The mage wished to die so the stolen magic would vanish with him, but Kurogane refused to let him do that.
He made a deal with the space/time witch, Fye was turned into a vampire and he accepted to become his only prey. This decision shows how much Kurogane cares about his loved ones as by accepting the witch’s deal he also accepted to “be linked” to the mage maybe for the rest of his life. He knew that Fye wouldn’t be grateful for this, but he didn’t care as long as the other would live. He considers feeding him as his duty as unwilling as the mage could be.

Still in Tokyo , he discovered that the person who scattered the princess’ memory through space and time was the same person who murdered hi mother. If his original goal was to go back home, Kurogane now is ready to follow the group until the end to avenge his family and his friends.

Despite the fact he would do anything he can to save someone he loves, he’s able to understand when things are over and let people die even if he doesn’t want them to.
It seems that he has been deeply affected by the clone’s departure in Tokyo but he says that he doesn’t expect him to turn back into the kind boy he used to be (At least in the French version of the manga. English scan/trad teams translated it differently.) He understands that it can’t be possible. He doesn’t hate the real boy and in Infinity he seems to be the only person of the group to show (rough) kindness to him.

Unlike Fye he looks ahead and the past doesn’t matter to him. The most important for him isn’t what you’ve done but what you’re doing or what you are planning to do.

Courage and honour are qualities important to him but Kurogane does what he thinks is good, even if it isn’t from a general point of view.

History:

Kurogane was born in a noble family. He grew up in the province of Suwa, in a world similar to feudal Japan. In his world humans had to cohabit with onis (monsters). His father was the lord of Suwa, he protected the province using his strength. His mother was a priestess and also protected Suwa creating a magic barrier around their lands. Kurogane’s childhood was quite happy. However, good times never last : when he was still in his early teens he lost his family and his land. His mother was murdered by the main evil character from Tsubasa, FWR, as she was praying for the sake of Suwa. The magic barrier fell as she died and Suwa fell in one night.

He was rescued later by the imperial army leaded by Kendappa, the empress of Japan, and her younger sister Tomoyo. Later, Kurogane was made a ninja at Tomoyo’s court. He searched for his mother’s murderer but never found him. His notion of protecting his princess meant slaughtering everything that represented a menace. Tomoyo , being a rather pacifist person, disagreed with Kurogane’s acts.

One day, after he misbehaved again Tomoyo sent him on a journey to learn the true meaning of strength. She also pretended she cursed him, telling him he would lose a part of his strength if he killed someone.

Kurogane landed in the dimension witch’s shop .On the same time other people appeared: two teenagers (Shaolan and Sakura) and a man (Fye). Each of them had a wish that the witch could grant. Kurogane wanted to go back to Japan, Fye to never go back to his world, and Shaolan wanted to travel to save Sakura whose memories had been scattered through different worlds in the form of feathers. They had different wishes but one single goal: travelling through dimensions. But a wish has a price and they couldn’t pay separately. Forced to travel together, each of them paid a part of the price.

At the beginning of their travel, Kurogane immediately claimed that his only goal was to go back to Japan and declared he had no intention to help Shaolan in his quest. However, he understood that if he wanted to go back home he would have to have to help the kids. Fye, the magician of the group kept bothering him during almost 120 chapters, calling him by cute names, provoking and teasing him. Even if Fye is talented at driving him mad, Kurogane seems to respect him as a friend and companion even if strangling the mage is often too tempting.

Through the manga his soft spot for his friends is more shown by his acts than by his speech. Along the chapters we learn that he pays attention to them more than he seems to. He noticed quite immediately that there was something off with Fye’s behaviour and sometimes managed to make his mask fall for short instants (Shura country, piffle world and Tokyo). In outo, he noticed that Shaolan had a blind eye. He also accepted to teach swordsmanship to the kid.

In Tokyo world it is revealed that the boy travelling with the group was a clone of the original Shaolan and possessed half of the kid’s heart. When the real kid took back what belonged to him, the clone‘s goal remained to search for the feathesr but not in order to save Sakura anymore. To achieve his goal he attacked Fye to steal his magic concealed in his eyes. He managed to knock out the mage. The clone gouged out and ate Fye’s left eye, absorbing half of his magic.

The mage was dying and wanted to die pretending that if he did, the magic stolen by the clone would fade away - that infuriated Kurogane . One’s value of his own life was something important for the ninja and the mage’s behaviour was getting on his nerves. He couldn’t let Fye die and made a wish to Yuuko to let him live. The only solution to keep Fye alive was to turn him into a vampire. As it wasn’t the mage’s choice to keep on living, Kurogane took as a price the responsibility to become his only prey and to feed him.

After that, Fye became more distant toward Kurogane. He stopped calling him by nicknames.
The real Shaolan joined their group. Unlike the others, Kurogane seemed to accept the kid quite immediately.

Later, they ended up in Infinity, a world where competitions of “living chess” were popular.
The group entered the tournament, Sakura needing the winner’s prize to fulfil a wish she made to Yuuko.
The princess and Fye isolated themselves from the rest of the group.
During the final battle of the tournament Sakura obtained two of her feathers. Her magic increased to the point it became stronger than Fye’s one.
Victim of a curse, the mage killed the princess, stabbing her. She didn’t really die - her soul and body were separated. Her soul went into a dream world and her body went to Celes : Fye’s country.

The group landed in Celes .As he knew that they would have to fight, Fye sealed Kurogane’s sword into the ninja’s hand so he could use it whenever he wanted. The king of Celes ; Ashura-ou, was waiting for Fye and the rest of the group . He revealed them the mage’s past. Fye was a traitor. When he was young he had accepted to become Fei Wong Reed’s pawn in order to bring back to life a member of his family he thought he killed.

Kurogane and Fye fought but the ninja’s goal wasn’t to hurt the mage but to attack his king and his magic. Kurogane had noticed something wrong in what the king revealed to them. He made Fye understand that he had been manipulated by his King.

Fye had been cursed two times: his second curse made Celes shrink and vanish around them. They were trapped into a cage growing smaller and smaller. The mage used his magic to let Kurogane and the kids out but wasn’t powerful enough to get out too. Kurogane was on the verge of dying from a wound caused by Ashura and he heard Tomoyo’s voice telling him he could save the mage if he cut his arm as it contained a bit of Fye’s magic (the sealed sword). Because he couldn’t leave Fye behind, Kurogane sacrificed his arm and saved him.

The group landed in Japan. Kurogane woke up in his own room.

Special Abilities:

-Swordsmanship: Kurogane is an excellent swordsman. He was the best fighter and oni hunter of Japan. He usually fights with swords longer than a common Katanas and seems to be able to use different types of swords. Kurogane doesn’t have any magic powers but his attacks can counter a spell as in Celes he manages to block Fye’s magic with his sword.
-Physical strength: Kurogane is strong, he can lift heavy objects easily (or a princess…) .He has a good punch too. He can endure pain and keeps fighting even if he’s seriously wounded.
-Agility and speed: He’s fast and doesn’t lose his balance easily. However he’s slower than Fye but he has a lot of endurance.
-Psychological strength: Even if he’s not the optimistic kind of person he always keeps his head up and his mind clear even in the middle of the most difficult situations. He doesn’t panic easily and can put his feelings aside if they are troubling him.

-Caring and protective: He has a strong desire to protect his beloved ones. Even if he tries to hide it and deny it, he worries a lot about the members of his group. He wouldn’t hesitate to risk his life for them.

Worst nightmare :

There are fighting noises and everything’s blurry. Suddenly, he sees a familiar scene; there’s a hand holding a sword vanishing into a space/time portal. Kurogane runs, ready to attack but the portal closes before he reaches it. He’s standing all alone surrounded by corpses. He recognises Tomoyo, the kids and the mage, everyone he cares about is dead. He’s the only survivor again; he failed at protecting them and can’t avenge them.
